History of Brandling Art Society

Brandling Art Society is a collective of artists that are
inspired by drawing and painting from a life model that originated nearly 40
  years ago.

The group oiginally grew for a need for artists to have acess to
drawing from a life model at a time when this was out of fashion in art
schools.

In 1974 the group began regularly meeting in the home
of Penny Janyack, a book illustrator and animator.
From there the artists moved to
Jane Macgowans home in theEastern suburbs until
1978, when they then moved to the empty School of Arts building, on Pitt
St. Sydney.(Now the Art House Hotel)

In 1983 Mrs Jane Macgowan, philanthropist and patron to the arts
become the Patron and provided the much loved Brandling Street studio to provide
studio space for the artists of Sydney.

For many years the sessionswhere held at this Alexandria address,
and old canning complete with an original well in the courtyard.A number of
exhibitions where held there over the years and many Sydney based artists will
have fond memories of this venue

Jane Macgowan was subsequently awarded the ‘Order of Australia’
for Services to the Arts.

In 2006 Jane who
is now in her 80’s, reluctantly sold the Brandling Street studio and we
moved to  the Alpha House Gallery
inNewtown.

We became an Incorperated Association, Brandling Art Society in
the same year.

Currently
we have meetings in 2 locations, still at Alpha House and at Addison Road
  Community Centre in Marrickville
